A few months ago, Škoda India announced a campaign called “Name Your Škoda” to name their new compact SUV. They shortlisted ten names, and yesterday, Škoda Auto India revealed that the new SUV, which is under 4 meters in length, will be called the Kylaq. The name is derived from the Sanskrit word for crystal and fits Škoda’s traditional ICE SUV nomenclature, starting with ‘K’ and ending with ‘Q’.
According to Škoda India, the Škoda Kylaq is specifically developed for India by teams in India and the Czech Republic, focusing on versatility, safety, and dynamics, while emphasizing localization, low maintenance costs, and a hassle-free ownership experience. Based on a larger car platform, this compact SUV will provide a ‘big car’ feel within the 4-meter footprint.
The Škoda Kylaq will likely have a similar silhouette to its larger sibling, the Kushaq. However, there will be changes at the front, such as a hexagon pattern on the side and rear, along with refined and precise DRL light signatures.
It will be based on the same MQB-A0-IN platform used for the Kushaq and Slavia, but Škoda claims that the Kylaq will have a big car feel, high ground clearance, and space around the wheels to handle uneven road surfaces, lending the car its SUV character.
The Skoda Kylaq will get the same petrol engine that the Kushaq and Taigun have, which means it will get a 1.0 TSI engine that makes 115 bhp of power and 178 nm of peak torque, and this transmission is mated with a 6-speed MT and 6 AT.
The Kylaq is expected to arrive in India in the first quarter of 2025 and will compete with the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Tata Nexon Kia Sonet, etc.
