Citroen has globally unveiled the all-new Basalt Vision coupe-SUV, suggesting that India may soon witness a more competitive coupe SUV segment.
This marks the fourth model under the company’s C-Cubed programme, following the C3 and eC3 hatchbacks, and the C3 Aircross SUV. The Basalt, set to be produced in India and exported to South American markets, is positioned as Citroen’s second locally-developed SUV in the country.
The Basalt Vision bears a striking resemblance to the C3 Aircross, sharing its Smart Car platform. Notably, the split headlamp design signature and LED daytime running lamps carry over, with slight variations such as projector headlamps.
The side profile echoes similarities with squared-out wheel arches and creases, albeit with a more squared-off cladding over the arches. The rear end is characterized by clean surfacing and larger, newly designed tail lamps, emphasizing a coupe SUV aesthetic.
While interior details remain undisclosed, expectations lean towards features borrowed from the C3 Aircross but possibly enhanced for the Basalt. Engine specifications are yet to be revealed, but projections suggest utilization of the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine seen in the C3 Aircross.
Set for launch in the second half of 2024, the Basalt will likely position itself above the C3 Aircross. Its primary contender, Tata Curvv, expected to arrive earlier, poses a significant challenge.
The Curvv, set to debut in April-May 2024, presents both EV and ICE versions with an estimated introductory price range of Rs10.50 – 11.50 Lakh. Additionally, Mahindra’s XUV.e9, solely electric, poses indirect competition.
Citroen Basalt Price in India :
It’s going to be a tedious battle for Citroen to offer the Basalt at a competitive price point. If Tata launches the Curvv ICE version in the coming months, it will become even more challenging to compete. Therefore, we can anticipate that the price range for the Basalt will fall between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 18 lakh.
These upcoming models signify a shift in India’s automotive landscape, diversifying beyond conventional SUVs and sedans. The Basalt, poised as an entry into the burgeoning coupe SUV segment, embodies Citroen’s commitment to innovation and adaptation in the Indian market.
