With the announcement of the new-generation Scorpio’s launch date, Mahindra has also clarified that the existing Scorpio will persist on the market. The SUV, renamed ‘Scorpio Classic, will be sold alongside the new Mahindra Scorpio-N.
The current-generation Scorpio is powered by a single 2.2-litre diesel engine that produces 120 PS/280 Nm on the base model and 140 PS and 319 Nm on all other trim levels. The former comes with a 5-speed manual transmission, while the latter is currently only available with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The new-generation Scorpio is expected to borrow powertrains from the XUV700, which means it will be available with both the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and the 2.2-litre oil burner. However, it remains to be seen whether they will be offered the same key as their elder sibling. If this is the case, both manual and automatic transmission options will be available with both the petrol and diesel engines. Furthermore, the 2022 Scorpio will be available with an optional 4×4 drivetrain, making it one of the most affordable SUVs in India to do so.
To really be genuine, the current-generation Scorpio appears outdated in comparison to much more modern rivals. Spy shots show a much larger infotainment screen with AC vents on either side. The car gets circular dials for the automatic climate control and the volume knob, similar to the current-generation model.
The current Scorpio comes standard with cruise control, automatic climate control, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth and AUX connectivity, and auto headlamps with LED DRLs. The new-generation SUV, on the other hand, will almost certainly come with a slew of new features, such as an 8-inch touchscreen with connected-car technology, a wireless charger, wireless smartphone connectivity, a 360-degree camera, an electric sunroof, a semi-digital instrument cluster, and much more.
The current-generation Scorpio costs between Rs 13.54 lakh and Rs 18.62 lakh (ex-showroom). However, the 2022 edition of the three-row SUV is expected to have a slightly lower starting price in order to compete with the XUV700, which is currently priced from Rs 13.18 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). The top-end variants of the new Scorpio, on the other hand, are expected to be slightly more expensive than the current model.
