2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno VS Hyundai i20 comparision

2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno models are now available in India, and they are priced starting at ₹ 6.35 lakh, going up to ₹ 9.49 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Baleno competes mainly with Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz, and Honda Jazz. In the previous post, we compared the Baleno with Tata Altroz. Today, we compare the Baleno with one of the most feature-loaded cars in this segment, the Hyundai I20.

The above table shows that the i20 is slightly larger than the Baleno in every dimension, including length, height, width, and wheelbase. In terms of boot, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno’s luggage space has been reduced to 318 litres in the 2022 model from 339 litres in the predecessor. This is due to the rear glass being angled differently to provide better visibility to the driver. The i20, on the other hand, has a boot space of 311 litres.

Both cars offer very different engine and transmission options. The Baleno comes with a single naturally aspirated petrol engine with two transmission options. The i20 offers a wide range of engine and transmission options which is its key advantage.

With its 1.2-litre DualJet dual VVT naturally aspirated petrol engine, the 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno produces 88.5 bhp and 113 Nm of peak torque. With this engine, you can choose from either a five-speed manual or an AGS unit (AMT speaks for Maruti Suzuki).

In contrast, the i20 offers three engine options: a 1.2L NA petrol, a 1.0L turbo-petrol, and a 1.5L diesel. With this hatchback, you have the choice of five different transmissions – 5-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, 6-speed iMT, 7-speed DCT, IVT.

The new Maruti Suzuki Baleno facelift now includes a couple of first-in-segment features. The new Baleno has a 360-degree parking camera, a head-up display, a larger 9-inch infotainment unit, an ARKAMYS-powered surround sound system, Suzuki Connect with over 40 connected car features, climate control, six airbags, and more. In the facelifted version, the Baleno also includes cruise control.

As the most feature-packed car in the segment, the i20’s feature list is lengthy. The i20 has a 10.25-inch touchscreen display, a 7-speaker Bose sound system, a wireless phone charger, ambient lighting, an air purifier, cruise control, and an all-digital instrument console. In fact, the Hyundai i20 also offers a sunroof.

The facelifted Maruti Suzuki Baleno starts at Rs. 6.35 lakh and goes up to Rs. 9.49 lakh. It comes in four different trim levels. The Hyundai i20 has a starting price of Rs. 6.98 lakh and a maximum price of Rs. 11.47 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno vs Hyundai i20 : Verdict

After the above comparison, it is clear that the i20 is superior to the Baleno in every way except price. The base variant of the i20 costs nearly Rs 63,000 more than the base variant of the Baleno. So, if you compare the base variants of both cars, the Baleno’s base variant is superior to the i20 base variant because it offers a slightly more powerful and fuel-efficient engine than the i20 base at a lower price. However, if you want a high-performance hatchback, you can choose the i20 Turbo petrol variant.
