Ferrari, the Italian sports car manufacturer, has launched the 296 GTB in India, replacing the Ferrari F8 Tributo in the carmaker’s lineup. The new Ferrari 296 GTB is the first Ferrari to be powered by a mid-mounted hybrid V6 engine capable of driving the car in pure EV mode.
What’s the significance of the term 296 GTB?
The numerical designation in the 296 GTB refers to its 2,992cc, six-cylinder engine, while the Gran Turismo Berlinetta establishes it as the latest in a long line of Ferrari sportscars dating back to the mid-1950s. The 296 GTB is Ferrari’s first road car with a six-cylinder engine; previous models were sold under the now-defunct Dino brand.
Ferrari 296 GTB- Engine Specifications
The new Ferrari 296 GTB is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 engine that produces 654 bhp and has turbochargers located between the engine’s two banks, making it compact and effective. As a result, the engine is coupled to an electric motor that produces 166hp, for a total power output of 830hp. The combined torque output is 740Nm, which, according to Ferrari, allows the 296 GTB to sprint from 0-100kph in 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of more than 330kph. An 8-speed automatic transmission transfers all of the power to the road.
The Ferrari capable of being driven in Pure EV mode
With a new hybrid engine, Ferrari has managed to keep its overall weight under control at 1,470 kg, which is 30 kg more than the F8 Tributo it replaces. Ferrari has also kept the design simple by concealing the active rear wing beneath the rear deck, which the carmaker claims will generate 100kg of downforce at 250 kmph. Aside from that, the engine is supplemented by a floor-mounted 7.45kWh battery pack that generates an additional 164 bhp, allowing the 296 GTB to have an all-electric range of 25 km and a top speed of 135 kmph.
Ferrari 296 GTB- Cockpit
The 296 GTB has a tech-laden cabin design similar to the flagship SF90 Stradale. From the instrument cluster to the passenger-side display, the cockpit is entirely digital. The gearshift selector pays homage to Ferrari’s classic ‘H-gate’ design, and the middle tunnel is reminiscent of the SF90. Overall, the interiors appear to be more driver-oriented.
